2008 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Biggest, most powerful midsize pickup. introductionthe dodge dakota looks big. It looks nearly as big and tough as the full-size dodge ram. And, in fact, it is big. It's the biggest pickup in the midsize class. It's also available with a v8. And its 7,050-pound maximum towing capacity is the best in the class. Getting in is easy, and the interior is comfortable and convenient, with controls that are easy to reach and operate. The rear doors on extended cabs and crew cabs open wide, and the crew cab can accommodate six people. A new under-seat storage system for crew cabs provides useful cargo carrying capacity. The extended cab has earned five-star safety ratings in both front and side impact testing by the federal government (nhtsa). underway, the dakota is smooth and quiet. The optional 4. 7-liter v8 is improved for 2008, with more power and better fuel economy. It burbles subtly in the background when cruising, but really scoots when the throttle is mashed. It is also flex-fuel capable, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. The steering is light for easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots and the dakota responds quickly on mountain roads and tracks nice and straight on the highway. for 2008, dakota gets several significant changes: the 4. 7-liter v8 is boosted to 302 horsepower (from 230). The former 260-hp high-output version is no longer available (for obvious reasons). on the outside, the hood, grille, front fascia, headlights, fenders and rear spoiler have been modified for 2008, and built-in cargo box utility rails have been added. It comes with a 6 1/2-foot bed. Each can seat five to six passengers, but back-seat riders will be much more comfortable in the crew cab. Both bodies are built on the same 131. 1-inch wheelbase. six trim levels are available: st, sxt, slt, trx/trx4, sport and laramie. Regardless of trim, however, extended cabs come with a front bench seat split 40/20/40; crew cabs come with front bucket seats, with the bench seat as an option. Bucket seats are optional. traditional part-time 4wd is available for all models. It can be set to 2wd, 4wd low or 4wd high. The 4wd modes are locked, so the truck shouldn't be driven on dry pavement when in 4wd. A full-time 4wd system with an electronically controlled locking center differential is available on trx4, sport and laramie models. It normally operates in 4wd high that can be driven on dry pavement, and has locking 4wd low and 4wd high settings. the standard engine is a 3. 7-liter v6. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 engine is available for slt, sport and trx/trx4 models, and is standard on laramie. It comes with a choice of six-speed manual or five-speed automatic, though the laramie is available only with the automatic. st extended cab 19,435) and 4x4 23,685) and crew cab 22,135) and 4x4 25,085) come standard with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, am/fm/cd stereo with audio auxiliary jack, tinted rear windows, front disc/rear drum brakes with rear-wheel anti-lock (abs), and 16-inch steel wheels. Crew cabs have split-folding rear seats. sxt extended cab 20,995) and 4x4 25,245) and crew cab 23,640) and 4x4 26,590) add power windows, mirrors and locks; remote keyless entry; center console, cruise control; fold-down rear jump seats (extended cab); rear exterior cargo lamps; tilt steering; and 16-inch painted aluminum wheels. slt extended cab 23,950) and 4x4 26,900) and crew cab 26,170) and 4x4 29,120) are upgraded with yes essentials seat fabric (claimed to be stain resistant, odor resistant, and anti-static); sirius satellite radio with a one-year subscription; security alarm with sentry key engine immobilizer; six-way power adjustable driver's seat; overhead console with compass, temperature readout and trip computer; sliding rear window with defrost; full-swing rear doors (extended cab) that open 170 degrees; color-keyed carpet mats; and fog lights. An optional hands-free communications system uses bluetooth technology to integrate cell phones with the truck's audio system. A sunroof 850) is available on. walkarounddodge dakota looks massive and menacing, with a long snout devoted to crush space. Last redesigned for 2005, the dodge dakota has been given a facelift for 2008. the dakota shares its styling themes with the full-size dodge ram and durango suv. All three share the retro big-rig grille motif and bulging fenders that have become trademarks of the dodge truck brand. Still, dakota boasts sharper, crisper lines and flatter planes than its relatives; and its grille is laid back, not vertical. The front fender lines are deliberately extended halfway along the length of the door. The rear fenders reflect the fronts with bulges that extend all the way to the rear of the truck. Cargo box top protection is also newly available. visual changes for 2008 include a grille that is more integrated into the hood, which also has new character lines. The front fenders also now extend over the headlights and are trimmed with bright surrounds. The changes are subtle, but noticeable. a coil-over-shock independent front suspension is used on both 2wd and 4wd models, with conventional leaf springs at the rear. All models come with front and rear tow hooks and tie-downs in the bed. interiorthe driver's seat looks good and feels good with its upper and lower support wings and good padding where it counts. Interior room, even for tall drivers is excellent. black-on-white gauges are outlined with bright rings, and the central speedometer is about twice as large as the other two gauges. The angular center stack houses the sound system, climate controls and vents. Brushed metal accents brighten the cockpit, and the whole design works very well in terms of usability, convenience, and reach. The dash and console are dominated by plastic, however, showing the dakota is built to a price. The materials look good but not great, and interior fit and finish is generally good. the center console, redesigned for 2008, has three integrated cupholders, two of which are modular and can be removed to provide more storage space. The console also has lots of cubby holes to stash small items, and a pull-out bin designed to hold an mp3 player or cell phone. It has voice control, and the nav system has real-time traffic. Dodge says the hard drive will hold 1600 songs. all but base st extended cab models have auxiliary rear doors that swing open 170 degrees. The front doors must be open to open the rears. The rear seats are deliberately stepped up on their bases so rear-seat occupants can see out more easily, and they are split into 60/40 sections. Rear-seat room is generous for family use, with 37 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. new for 2008 is a handy under-seat storage system. It includes two milk crate-type bins that are collapsible and removable. Like the chrysler minivans' new swivel 'n go seating system, this storage system is another example of chrysle.

2008 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Never before have trucks been more capable for hauling and towing nor more competent at coddling passengers. There is no mistaking a ford f-150 for a nissan titan or a toyota tundra, nor even confusing a chevy silverado with a gmc sierra. Any one of them would be a good choice from a consumer's point of view. but it was the ram that started the high-style-truck trend back in 1994 when dodge took a risk with a bold, retro big-rig design. That truck transformed ram from a bit player with staid styling to a big-stage event. The dodge ram has run with the big boys ever since, sometimes leading, sometimes trailing, but always solidly on the bill. Whether the '08 ram is merely as good as the trucks listed above, or somewhat better, is more a matter of personal preference than anything else. the dodge ram 1500 light-duty pickups are smooth and refined. Their cabs are comfortable and convenient, among the roomiest in their respective classes. The quad cab is handy for hauling friends and family but even the regular cab is roomy. arguably, the ram is the best-looking truck on the market. Its styling is bold and handsome, even more so in its latest incarnation. ram was extensively re-engineered for 2006, with a new hydroformed frame that's boxed its full length; plus new suspension and body mounts that improved ride, handling, and quietness. That same year, ram was modestly restyled inside and out. the 2008 model year brings new life to the 4. 7-liter v8, with horsepower up 31 percent to 310 hp and torque up 10 percent to 330 pound-feet. Other updates to the 2008 dodge ram lineup include simpler maintenance intervals, trailer sway control added to the optional stability system, available tire pressure monitors, new steering hardware for 4wds, dark maple woodgrain trim on laramie, and two new colors right out of the muscle car age: sunburst orange and detonator yellow. ram's optional hemi engine delivers power and efficiency. The switchover is seamless, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 20 percent, says dodge. Step on the gas, however, and the cylinders reawaken, ready to deliver the 345 peak ponies that make the hemi-powered ram one of the most exciting light-duty pickups on the market. Several engines are offered: a 3. 7-liter overhead-cam v6, 4. 7-liter v8, and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8. Several trim levels are offered: st is the base model with vinyl upholstery and wind-up windows. St comes standard with air conditioning, tilt steering, variable intermittent wipers, 40/20/40 vinyl seat, am/fm/cd stereo, rear-wheel abs, 17-inch steel wheels and a full-size spare tire, and a v8 and electric-shift transfer case on 4wd. Options parallel those on the st, although the stx is the trim level for the trx4 off-road package. slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8, six-disc cd changer, carpeting, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors, overhead console with mini-trip computer and compass, cruise control, and 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication, 5. 7 v8, on-demand 4wd, bucket seats, six-way power driver seat and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A power sunroof and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system are available for slt quad cabs. the sport group for the slt comes with the hemi engine and five-speed automatic transmission, unique cloth-faced bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, body-color grille and bumper fascia, fog lamps, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Options are the same as for the slt. laramie is the luxury trim level, offered only as quad cab automatic. Leather seats are standard, with a heated, split 40/20/40 bench up front and power adjustment for the driver. Options include navigation, power sunroof, adjustable pedals, and electronic upgrades. safety features include optional side-curtain airbags designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts. An electronic stability program (esp) is optional. walkaroundthe 2008 dodge ram presents a bold, distinctive appearance with its big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders. The concept dates back a dozen years, but it received a major redesign for 2002 and a makeover for 2006. The headlamps cut back deeper into the fenders, and a flattened front bumper on sport and laramie emphasizes ram's big-rig image. A slot in the front bumper aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance. ram's trademark front grille remains one of the most instantly recognizable front ends on the road. A thick band of chrome surrounds the grille on st, slt and laramie; the band is body color on sport models. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders, helpful for clearance, less so for seeing edges in tight quarters. a fast, raked-back windshield enhances aerodynamics and water management, while gracefully blending modern sleekness with ram's retro lower body. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smooth transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smooth and integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are mounted on platforms to minimize wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keep water off of the mirrors. That seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. All beds are fitted with boat cleats designed to handle 1,000 pounds each. ordering the long bed adds 20 inches to the wheelbase of a dodge ram. And a quad cab wheelbase is 20 inches longer than a regular cab. So a quad cab long bed has 40 more inches of wheelbase than a regular cab short bed. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26 gallons; some of the latter offer a 34-gallon option. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups, and its cab is a pleasant place to be. It sacrifices a few inches of bed space for interior space. regular cab and quad cab versions offer identical roominess in the front seats. Standard front seating in the ram is a bench split 40/20/40. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop. we've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable. The driving position is good, with good visibility in all directions, though the aerodynamic front end makes it impossible to see the front corners. Big mirrors on the ram make it easy to see what's behind. we found the bucket seats in the sport version comfortable and supportive and the sporty fabric looks durable. The latest fabrics, first introduced with the 2007 models, are designed to be more stain and odor-resistant than before, while also reducing static cling. Laramie models get silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with higher-contrast color seat inserts. the ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. A hook on the passenger-side floor well is provided for securing a plastic grocery bag or anything else with suitable handles. premium amenities such as the full-screen gps navigation radio and bluetooth hands-free communications are available, along with a rear-seat dvd system for quad cabs. We found the navigation radio to be a nice design and relatively easy to operate; these systems are getting better all the time and the latest chrysler group's systems work quite well. overall, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls that gives the center dash a nice look and feel.
